Two Hearts Breaking (Greatest Hits countdown Part 1)

I haven't written a song for a radio-type release by myself for some time; most have been co-writes lately. The songs tend to be more 'commercial' when I co-write, but I guess I like the ones I write by myself more because they tend to be less generic...

I started writing Two Hearts Breaking while in Colorado last August, then finished it in time to record in November for the Greatest Hits collection.

I met an elderly woman who had been married 60 years. I said, “What has it been like?”

She said, “It has only felt like 5 minutes. Under water.”

Ha! It made me laugh, but also made me think... From great ecstasy also comes great pain. To be in a posture to love, you are inherently in a posture to feel pain.

So, this is a love song, sort of.

It’s the shadow side of the 'we are one' concept. With all light there is shadow, and I think everyone can relate. It’s not the blush and sigh of the same happiness, but the echo and scream of the same pain. I loved writing images of how the couple is the same person, but instead of it being a 'you complete me' in a positive way, it’s the uglier side of being connected.  Rolling Stone has a very special exclusive streaming on their site today only so head over there to listen and let me know what you think.

I'm also excited for you to hear the songs I re-cut with Kelly Clarkson and the Pistol Annies. I love both these artists dearly, and was so honored they sang with me.

Kelly said she has sung Foolish Games in talent shows growing up – and she sang the heck out of it for our record. I loved hanging with her. She is so down to earth and sweet. And saucy. Ha!

Miranda and I know each other since the Nashville Star days and I have loved watching her career soar. Her voice is great and I love her country girl spirit. Ashley toured with me and we got close on the road, and when I heard the Annies all sing together I loved them immediately.

I went in thinking we would cut You Were Meant For Me like the country song it is, but it ended up being a sort of alt rock thing - ya just never know how they will come out! Hope you guys like it and let me know what you think! I also wanted to share with you guys different parts about the making of this album and the thought processes that went into it. Tune in every Wednesday and Friday for some new exclusive videos on jeweljk.com.

My favorite part of the album by the way, is my letter to you all (you will know what I mean when you get your copy!). I meant every word of it. Thanks for all your support all these years... More soon...

(The Sound Of) Two Hearts Breaking

You're the ship
I'm the wreck
You're the bomb
I'm the tick
You're the pause
Before the fall
I'm the crash
That follows it all

(Chorus)
We are one
We are whole
We are one whole dying soul
We're the crash, the burn
The dream that turns
From ecstasy to aching
We are the sound of two hearts breaking

You’re the blink
I'm the eye
You're the shiver
I'm the knife
You're the crutch
I'm the break
You’re the emptiness I make

(Chorus)
We are one
We are whole
We are one whole dying soul
We're the crash, the burn
The dream that turns
From ecstasy to aching
We are the sound of two hearts breaking

(Bridge)
I'm dry heaving tears from crying all these years
And I know this is your nightmare come true
I never wanted this for you, but...

I'm the teeth
You're the heart
Together
We're the start
Of the inhale
And a scream
You're the not waking
I'm the not dreaming

(Outro Chorus)
We are ...
We are one
We are whole
We are one whole dying soul
We're the crash, the burn
The dream that turns
From ecstasy to aching
We are the sound of
We are the sound of two hearts breaking
